European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
