The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
